Although there is some resurgence of interest in the importance of relationship‐based working in early prevention and child welfare (McGregor & Devaney, 2019; Trevithick, 2014), it could be argued that the focus on child protection continues to overrate influence in policy and social work delivery, which in turn dictates the direction of travel in social work practice. Here, we draw on focus group data collected from child welfare social workers in England, Ireland, Norway and Sweden to compare these different contextual changes and how these are reflected in related social work practice decisions. The focus group discussions were based on a vignette, and thematic analysis was applied.
